many times that is caused by some program using 100% of the CPU cycles, when
it is finished, the mouse works again.
if you have task manager open, watch to see which process is taking all the
CPU when the mouse 'FREEZES'

Now for the rest of the story. For the wireless mouse, it was the
batteries. (Proof of brain rot or mad cow that this didn't dawn on
me.)
Also, apparently I need to turn off mouse to extend battery life when
not using the computer.
AND the other mouse with wire if hooked to the computer only
works during start up and it still stops. This wasn't always
true. So perhaps I am not ready for old folks home just yet.
As I only need one mouse, I'll be OK.
And this computer has been checked from stem to stern for
viruses and malware and it is clean. I have quite alot
of open source freeware from Source Forge on the machine so they
must be doing a decent checking their software.
