Hello hoping there's a solution to this problem or I have a lot of work to do. here's the issue: I upgraded to vista from XP and when I opened the Windows.old folder I dragged out my music folder (Which wasn't 'My Music' it was just 'M U S I C' on my desktop. Anyway whenever I open an individual Band folder, song files, or the M U S I C folder in general it requires me to verify ownership.. Now that's where the problem lies, with this I would have to go through the 300+ folders individually and verify ownership (These aren't downloaded copies, this is legit, CD ripped songs and most of these CD's arent around anymore). I'm just wondering if there is an option to A) Verify everything at once or 2) Verify the folder and everything inside the folder at once.. If there's another way to do it please tell.. thanks in advance.. -- contra |

Hi, Right click the top level music folder, choose properties. Go to the security tab, click advanced. On the owner tab click on edit. Change to your account, then enable the line near the bottom for this to "replace owner on subcontainers and objects". Then apply/ok and wait while this propagates throught the entire folder structure, it may take some time depending on the number of files/folders involved. You should then be able to close the security dialogs and access the files without any further permissions issues. -- Best of Luck, Rick Rogers, aka "Nutcase" - Microsoft MVP http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/ Windows help - www.rickrogers.org My thoughts http://rick-mvp.blogspot.com "contra" <guest@unknown-email.com> wrote in message news:4733274fe6c471e322c67fda1e6eb27a@nntp-gateway.com... > > Hello hoping there's a solution to this problem or I have a lot of work > to do. here's the issue: I upgraded to vista from XP and when I opened > the Windows.old folder I dragged out my music folder (Which wasn't 'My > Music' it was just 'M U S I C' on my desktop. Why would you drag the whole folder on the Desktop? You might have only a shortcut on the Desktop and the actual folder in Windows.old. If this is the case, in Windows Explorer cut and paste (faster than copy and paste) the Music folder wherever you want - either in User/Music/ or, preferably, on a different partition. That's because you might want to delete Windows.old at some time. Also, you need to make a backup copy of the Music folder on another hard-drive... just in case. Ownership... as posted by Rick Rogers above. It's not a bad idea per se but you might lose the folder if you have to reinstall Vista.
