Hi Folks . I have been running my system now for 2 years with 3 operating systems on separate drives. I have just updated my processor from AMD Athlon 64 3500+ to a AMD Athlon 64 x2 Duel Core 4800+ . The xp pro 64 bit version runs fine as does the xp pro . My problem is with the Vista Ultimate operating system . The system starts fine and will just sit at the welcome screen no problems but when i close the welcome screen and start to use it for browsing or try to install anything i get the BSOD . I have had DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUALL blue screen & PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA blue screen errors , both of these i beleive are linked to memory. I have run memtest overnight with no error messages and visa memory checker 5 passes with no errors . I have installed the amd 64 bit drivers , bios is latest available , tried turning the memory down from 400 to its lowest and still it crashes . Reduce the memory to 2 gig and then after the install put the rest back in. Thanks for the quick response . The system only has 2 X 1gig matched pair installed . Totall = 2gb The vista Ultimate drive has been running fine for months prior to me upgrading the processor. -- Dazmarv |

The problem is not the memory sticks or XP would not work. The Microsoft memory tester in my experience very rapidly picks up on faulty memory sticks, which are more common even out of the blister pack than manufacturers will admit. Vista does not play nice in a three way system so your boot manager could be part of the problem such that Vista did not properly install. The BSODs you are getting suggest driver issues. If you can boot Vista into safe mode you may be able to reinstall motherboard and video drivers and see if that fixes the problem. Otherwise you need a total reinstall but make sure Vista is in its own and bootable partition and your boot manager can address Vista as well as XP oses. |

Thanks for the suggestions guys I also think this is a driver issue because all my other drives run fine as did the vista before i changed the processor . I have also downloaded the latest via drivers hoping that would fix the problem But no joy there either . btw . this is not a three way system i have a caddy with swappable drives . i just shut down and slide the operating system in i wish to use . -- Dazmarv |

As long as you download the latest drivers from the manufacturers Websites and not from Win Update since win update drivers are often way out of date and/or not compatible with other programs installed on your system. Did you try a repair install as I proposed previously or can you select repair from an F8 boot. Your problem appears to be related to the fact that your current installation does not know how to handle dual cores until the OS files recognizes that it needs to. Do you have a crash dump file you can share with us? [%windir%\Minidump] folder is the default location (I think).
