Hi, I'm new to these forums and I have a couple of questions about upgrading to a 64 bit OS system, Currently I am running a AMD athlon 64 x2 Dual core Processor. About 2 Gigs of RAM(Looking to upgrade to 8 hence getting 64 bit OS) Asus M2N32 Deluxe motherboard. As far as I know and have heard is that it can run a 64 bit OS system. Anyways I have a few questions and I am in need of dire help. First. When I run the 64 bit CD I plug in my key and the next button is "Disabled" I cant install vista 64 on any of my Hard drives. Second. Do I have to reformat my hard drive before jumping to 64? And lastly if anyone can post on how to actually install this in a detailed way that would help me a ton. Thanks in advanced, Spudunker -- Spudunker Posted via http://www.vistaheads.com |

Hi, First off, the term "upgrade" is a misnomer as there is no upgrading a 32-bit installation to a 64-bit one. While you do not need to format (provided you have sufficient drive space), you do need to do a clean install. Programs, settings, and accounts will not be migrated over. Are you booting from the x64 disk and initiating setup? Or are you inserting it while running the existing installation? You should be doing the former. -- Best of Luck, Rick Rogers, aka "Nutcase" - Microsoft MVP http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/ Windows help - www.rickrogers.org My thoughts http://rick-mvp.blogspot.com "Spudunker" <Spudunker.3e3x4a@no-mx.forums.vistaheads.com> wrote in message news:Spudunker.3e3x4a@no-mx.forums.vistaheads.com... > > Hi, I'm new to these forums and I have a couple of questions about > upgrading to a 64 bit OS system, Currently I am running a > > AMD athlon 64 x2 Dual core Processor. > About 2 Gigs of RAM(Looking to upgrade to 8 hence getting 64 bit OS) > Asus M2N32 Deluxe motherboard. > > As far as I know and have heard is that it can run a 64 bit OS system. > Anyways I have a few questions and I am in need of dire help. > > First. Hi, thanks for the reply I am booting from the disk, I am not running Vista at the time, but when I enter my key number I cant go next for some strange reason. I have a 40 gig primary hard drive with 17 gigs free which should be enough to install, or so I have read. -- Spudunker Posted via http://www.vistaheads.com |

I had thought of that, and I will make sure to check. But I should have clarified after I enter the key, I can click next it takes me to the "select a disk" I select my main Hard drive, but then the next button won't work so to say. Sorry about that. Ah, different problem. Are any volumes listed in the dialog? If not, or if you cannot select any of them (which is what you need to do), then it means you need to load a driver from the manufacturer. While Vista contains many needed ones, it may not have one for your hardware, and it should be obtained from the motherboard manufacturer. -- Best of Luck, Rick Rogers, aka "Nutcase" - Microsoft MVP http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/ Windows help - www.rickrogers.org My thoughts http://rick-mvp.blogspot.com "Spudunker" <Spudunker.3e4889@no-mx.forums.vistaheads.com> wrote in message news:Spudunker.3e4889@no-mx.forums.vistaheads.com... > > I had thought of that, and I will make sure to check. > But I should have clarified after I enter the key, I can click next it > takes me to the "select a disk" I select my main Hard drive, but then > the next button won't work so to say. > > Sorry about that. > And thanks > > Spudunker > > > -- > Spudunker > Posted via http://www.vistaheads.com > |

Thank you all for helping me. I got it to work. But now windows is telling me I can't use my key. So I'm on a 30day trial at the moment. -- Spudunker Posted via http://www.vistaheads.com |

Hi, If you're using a key that was previously activated, you will need to phone in for a new activation. Click start and type: slui 4 Hit <enter> for the dialog. -- Best of Luck, Rick Rogers, aka "Nutcase" - Microsoft MVP http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/ Windows help - www.rickrogers.org My thoughts http://rick-mvp.blogspot.com "Spudunker" <Spudunker.3e5dw1@no-mx.forums.vistaheads.com> wrote in message news:Spudunker.3e5dw1@no-mx.forums.vistaheads.com... > > Thank you all for helping me.
