I just bought a new Western Digital Scorpio Black WD3200BEKT 320GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Notebook Hard Drive from Newegg.com to upgrade and put into my laptop. The thing is I am trying to install windows vista 32 bit home premium from my original CD that came with the computer and it is not working. The install process runs, but then when it gets to the very last part it stop and sits there for around 2 hours and does nothing. Then the computer resets and the screen stays black, except for the mouse cursor which is still on the screen and which can still be moved around. I have tried using the WD install tools to partition the drive so that it is smaller because i heard having so much open data can create a problem but that did nothing. I have tried installing vista around 6 times and the same thing has happened every time. I know its not the vista CD because I tried installing with another vista CD and I got the exact same problem. I also know the drive works because I tried installing Ubuntu on it and it worked perfectly. I just want to get my windows vista up and running on this new drive. I called Dell tech support and tried to work things out with them but we could not find a solution to the problem. I also just looked on WD website and they said they do not deal with troubleshooting for installation on windows or Mac OS, so I'm SOL with them. As far as my tech specs go this is all I really know, so let me know if you need anything more specific. -Dell inspiron 1520 Notebook -Intel core 2 Duo 2.2 gigahertz -4 Gigs of ram -New WD 320 Harddrive -- Jynxapathy Posted via http://www.vistaheads.com |

Make sure that you are following in detail the instructions that came with you computer for reinstalling the Vista installation using the Installation or recovery DVDs that came with the system. It appears that you may have a partition or formatting problem with the new HDD. The thing is theres not a problem with the new harddrive from what I can tell. I was able to install Ubuntu on the drive just fine, and i can partition the drive to whatever i want before I try to install vista, it's the actual installation that faults. Another thing I tried in putitng the harddrive into a friends laptop, and installing vista, and it actually worked. It was an xps laptop, and i installed Vista normally and everything worked out. Then I took the harddrive out and put it back into my inspiron 1520 and it actually booted up and was running vista, but it was really laggy and kept freezing every second or two. I tried to restart the comp but the computer would not restart it just sat at the shutting down screen. I had to hard turn it off and then the next time i tried to turn it on it would not run vista. I put the vista CD and tried to repair it but that did not work. Another thing i wanted to try is doing a full system restore to put all my old files using the full system restore from an image. I actually made the image from my old computer onto an external harddrive, but when i try and do the restore from the little repair menu on the vista CD, it doesnt recognize the external harddrive thats plugged in. Any suggestions or pointers are greatly appreciated. -- Jynxapathy Posted via http://www.vistaheads.com |

Not surprising since it had all the needed drivers from the other computer and none for the one you tried using it with. >I put the vista CD and tried to repair it but that did not work. > >Another thing i wanted to try is doing a full system restore to put all >my old files using the full system restore from an image. Good. Because what you were trying to do was just as stupid as the first thing you tried. You can't take an image from Computer A and then use it to get Computer B running. >Any suggestions or pointers are greatly appreciated. Stop. Turn your computer over to a pro. You've done enough damage. |

Haha sorry for trying to figure out things on my own so I don't have to pay $90+ an hour. Thank you for the constructive insight though, you really showed me. -- Jynxapathy Posted via http://www.vistaheads.com |

If you install on one machine and move in another, make sure you disable all specific drivers for that machine's hardware - just leave the default MS drivers - ex. graphics, audio, printer and so on.
