I've been using Visual Studio (2005 Pro) at work, but not extensively. Now I am planning to get a copy of Visual Studio 2008 for use at home. Originally I assumed that I would want the Professional version, but after looking at the product comparison on the Microsoft web site, I don't see that the Pro version offers me very much. I will use VS for software development, mainly in C#. I want to be able to configure the component palette with third party components as well as ones that I write myself. I am a software developer with many years of experience, having worked with Delphi, C, C++, and numerous flavors of assembly language (and even PL/I, Fortran, and Cobol). I am new to C#. I do not need remote debugging, or the ability to write applications that work with Microsoft Office. I do not plan on using the Setup (installation) features. I am very happy with Inno Setup, an open source installation program. Am I missing something? I don't see that the extra cost buys me anything that I need, but I'm willing to listen to arguments to the contrary. If I buy Standard and decide I need the Pro can I upgrade? Thanks in advance for any advice. |

Will you need Crystal Reports? It's in Pro, but not in Std. AFAIK, there is no upgrade from Std to Pro, but you might want to check directly with Microsoft Sales on that. |
