I am using Vista Business and have UAC switched on; however it is irritating that UAC kicks in each time I run certain programs. Is there no way to 'teach' UAC that certain programs I use every day are safe and may be allowed to run without popping up a question to me each time? Of course I am loathe to switch UAC off, in case some malware tries to install itself sneakily. Any ideas would be appreciated |

Sorry, it doesn't have a learning function. >Of course I am loathe to switch UAC off, in case some malware tries to >install itself sneakily. > >Any ideas would be appreciated How long have you been online with computers? Have you ever had a virus or malware infection/infestation? I've been online since the Fall of '90 and can answer NO to both. I got along just fine without UAC until I installed Vista in May. I turned it off. |

There is a workaround utilising the Application Compatibility Toolkit. It may work for you. I would check other solutions before resorting to the ACT though. Check that the .exe is not blocked simply because it was downloaded from another machine: right-click the file > Properties > uncheck the blocked box if it exists. Check that there are no updated, Vista ready version of the software at the vendor's web site. Try to run the program in compatibility mode. Program Compatibility Wizard: http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/99a95df6-04e6-46eb-bb65-6404cd215e641033.mspx Selectively disable UAC for an application with ATC. (This information was previously published in the Microsoft Knowledge Base): http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com/window-on-windows/?p=635 Download the Application Compatibility Toolkit 5.0: http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com/window-on-windows/?p=635 > Of course I am loathe to switch UAC off, in case some malware > tries to install itself sneakily. I whole-heartedly agree. Take a look at the reasons MS developed UAC in this article, if you would like to know more.
