On Tue, 22 Jul 2008 21:34:14 -0500 I wrote a message enquiring about Restore Points. I had a reason. I had just used Restore to a Restore Point to force Vista Home Premium with SP1 to recognize my USB devices and I was curious about what Vista was really doing. I have since repeated the failure of Vista to recognize my USB devices and the restoration of that ability using Restore to a Restore Point. Here is the story: I have two scanners, an external hard drive, two printers and a Compact Flash Card reader attached to a month-old HP Pavilion computer via USB. On 21 Jul, I did extensive manipulations in my Pictures folder and subfolders, moving hundreds of files from one subfolder to another, and using Corel Paintshop Pro Photo X2 to edit many of the pictures as well as saving them to different folders in different formats. The files were all either in PSPP X2's native file format PspImage or Jpeg and I was making sure that I saved each picture in both formats. I worked with several hundred files that morning. Then in the afternoon I tried to scan another picture into my computer and my scanning software reported No Scanner Detected. I naturally suspected a hardware problem, and went through extensive checking, and interchanging cables, and devices with no success. Eventually I discovered that all USB devices except my default printer were not being detected by Vista. That's when I did a Restore to a previous Restore Point and Voila, the USB devices all started working as they should. Yesterday I again did extensive Picture file manipulations and again my scanner refused to work. So I did a Restore to the Previous Day's Restore Point, and Voila again, the devices started to work as they should. This appears to me to be a major Bug in Vista with SP1. Whether it is Vista's file manipulations or PSPX2's that is causing the USB failure, it is the responsibility of Vista to isolate PSPX2's manipulations from the core functions of Vista. How and to whom do I report this problem so that Microsoft can correct it? Bob |

Indeed they were not, all the changes I had made to the files and their locations were intact. The major change that I observedd was that the uSB devices now all worked as they should. Bob |

Try unplugging the usb device that failed and then reconnect. This might be less obtrusive and just as successful as a restore. That was the very first thing I did. It didn't work. That was then. This is now. And this is Vista. It's possible that one of your USB devices is causing the problem. |

I unplugged all that were suspect with no luck. As I mentioned in my earlier post, I first thought that it was a hardware problem so I unplugged and replugged all the devices. The only device that worked was my default printer. The others gave a message "Unknown Device". But restoring to a restore point when all the devices worked, then all USB devices worked as they should. Bopb |
