OK I have a Toshiba A200-28P laptop with Vista Home Premium SP1, NIS 2008(no issues with this) and a few times lately it keeps picking the odd draft email to mark it as read/sent email so I can't open it and edit it. Today I have 7 emails in the draft folder and it's picked one that I hadn't quite finished before I turned the laptop off to do this to, so now I can't open it and edit it to do this I've got to cut and paste it to a new email to finish this email. It's done it before and for no reason and the other day it sent 8 emails then when I turned the laptop on later in the evening all 8 were in the drafts folder as can't find message and they hadn't shown in the sent folder yet had sent as friends replied to them. Also another weird thing I've noticed is that on the laptop(have a Compaq desktop with same Vista) that when I send an email to the outbox it doesn't show as being there, you know how a little number shows next to the outbox telling you how many are in there. Has anybody has had this issue with Windows Mail on any other computer or is it unique to my laptop? Any help would be much appreciated Debbie(technically challenged in windows mail area on laptop at moment) -- Simreaper |

Looks like you may have found your first issues with NIS; these symptoms can occur as a result of an AV application setup to scan email that gets a tummy ache. Try removing NIS, running their debris removal tool to remove all the crud the uninstaller leaves behind, then use the "Custom" install feature to re-install it without any email scanning modules/services and see if the problem persists. Email scanning is redundant, it does nothing but create problems where none exist, and your system is fully protected without it, provided you keep the resident file system scanner up to date. http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039 Download and run the Norton Removal Tool Alternatively, you can try upgrading Windows Mail to Windows Live Mail, it is less prone to suffering bad effects from overly aggressive antivirus programs. http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview Hal -- Hal Hostetler, CPBE -- hhh@kvoa.com Senior Engineer/MIS -- MS MVP-Print/Imaging -- WA7BGX http://www.kvoa.com -- "When News breaks, we fix it!" Hi Hal, Thanks for this information and have to say the more I use Vista the more I hate it, as has more bugs than all the rainforests in the world do, wish had still been able to get XP when needed new laptop :( The weird thing is the only place I have this problem is with my laptop, it doesn't show a newly drafted email as in there unless you close the program and then reopen it then it shows a blue number 1 in brackets same for outbox yet desktop as soon as you send anything to draft or outbox it shows up immediately as being in there. Also did disable incoming and outgoing scanning on laptop and guess what happened to the email I put in the drafts folder last night before going to bed, any ideas? Yes it marked it as sent/read this morning when I turned it on and as had done a lot of it told laptop to forward it and then deleted the forwarded info and finished off the email. When you open the folder where the missing message should be, does it say anything like "There are no items in this view. Some=20 items may be hidden because a view is applied." That last=20 sentence is a hint that your Current View setting for that folder may be "Hide Read Messages". Which antivirus do you have? Some of them still bother Windows Mail even when they are disabled. --=20 Gary VanderMolen, MS-MVP (Mail) "Simreaper" <guest@unknown-email.com> wrote in message = news:4e5ff203d49c793f37b90442f7e335ef@nntp-gateway.com... >=20 > Hi Hal, >=20 > Thanks for this information and have to say the more I use Vista the > more I hate it, as has more bugs than all the rainforests in the world > do, wish had still been able to get XP when needed new laptop :( > The weird thing is the only place I have this problem is with my > laptop, it doesn't show a newly drafted email as in there unless you > close the program and then reopen it then it shows a blue number 1 in > brackets same for outbox yet desktop as soon as you send anything to > draft or outbox it shows up immediately as being in there. Hi Gary, Am touching wood that have fixed the problem after using Brink's reset Windows Mail tutorial, seems to recognise drafts better but still has a delay problem but am now seriously beginning to think this is a Toshiba thing and nothing to do with Windows Mail or NIS 2008 as when I made new folders it showed them when I clicked on Local Folders panel but then had to double click on them to get them to show on left hand panel. Might post this on Toshiba forum and see if its a known thing on this model or maybe its unique to Toshiba either way its annoying at times but can work round it just gets annoying at times. Hi Gary, No the messages are there and you can read them its just in the left hand panel where the Local folders and inbox etc are when you put an email in say the draft folder a small number in brackets should show up like this Draft (1) but on my laptop it doesn't do this unless you close the program then re-open then the correct numbers are there but wondering if this delay is a Toshiba thing as doesn't happen on my Compaq desktop and both have NIS 2008 and use Windows Mail on both. If I remember correctly, many Toshiba PCs and laptops come with a program called SMS Desktop already installed, even though this program causes problems in Windows Mail. Check your list of installed programs for any of these three programs: Google Toolbar, Google Desktop, and SMS Desktop. If you find any of them, uninstall them since all three of them cause problems in Windows Mail. Web pages that let you do a Google search are not a problem. Besides the SMS Desktop program mentioned in my previous post, your NIS 2008 could also be the culprit. If you continue to have problems with Windows Mail, do a trial uninstall of NIS, and follow up with their debris removal tool: http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039= As an alternative to uninstalling NIS 2008, you can upgrade to=20 Windows Live Mail, because it is less prone to suffering bad=20 effects from overly aggressive antivirus programs. http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview Either way, email scanning in any antivirus must be disabled, for reasons explained here: http://thundercloud.net/infoave/tutorials/email-scanning/index.htm --=20 Gary VanderMolen, MS-MVP (Mail) "Simreaper" <guest@unknown-email.com> wrote in message = news:76bbdac42feba96bad16447f235efac9@nntp-gateway.com... >=20 > Hi Gary, >=20 > No the messages are there and you can read them its just in the left > hand panel where the Local folders and inbox etc are when you put an > email in say the draft folder a small number in brackets should show = up > like this Draft (1) but on my laptop it doesn't do this unless you = close > the program then re-open then the correct numbers are there but > wondering if this delay is a Toshiba thing as doesn't happen on my > Compaq desktop and both have NIS 2008 and use Windows Mail on both. >=20 > Debbie=20 > Gary VanderMolen;786925 Wrote:=20 >> When you open the folder where the missing message should be, >> does it say anything like "There are no items in this view. Hi Gary, Thank you so much for the help and this could be the reason my desktop doesn't have the same issue as my Toshiba laptop does indeed have SMS desktop program installed and I couldn't see any reason for it but would to my non technical trained brain explain why both computers run the same NIS 2008 program but only one is suffering from problems. Just checked my laptops installed programs and no Google toolbar or Google desktop but the SMS Desktop is installed so will uninstall that and see if the issue goes away as couldn't understand why desktop seems problem free with the Windows Mail but laptop has issues with it. Will uninstall that program and let you know and if it does cure the problem will post it on Toshiba forum as bet others are finding it as well but like me just working round it or some are upgrading to the Windows Live Mail program some of you have mentioned. Thanks again for all the help much appreciated, Debbie Gary VanderMolen;787424 Wrote: > Besides the SMS Desktop program mentioned in my previous post, > your NIS 2008 could also be the culprit. Hi Gary, Have a question to ask as you seem very technical and I don't know what to do right now about this right I did a Trend Micro online scan and it came up with one detected grayware/spyware in a Toshiba installed program named C:/Program Files/ myphotobook/xtras/process.exe, attached the screen shot of result as don't know what to do as this isn't a program use, didn't even know was installed but definitely part of Toshiba stuff but says threat is low, could this be why Norton doesn't see it as a threat? Would you mind helping me if you can should I run the scan again and let it clean the file up or should I just ignore it? Thanks ever so much for any help you can give me with this. Many of the problems in Windows Mail caused by antivirus programs are slow to show up. There's a possibility that some on these problems only have a chance to show up if the antivirus program decides to block a message or takes longer than usual to decide whether to block it. There's a good chance that on your desktop whatever conditions are needed to trigger the problem just haven't happened yet, but will show up eventually if you keep running both a Norton antivirus program and Windows Mail on it. I don't have a membership with vistax64.com, so it won't let me see that screen shot. As a general rule, whenever I buy a new computer, I uninstall most (if not all) of the pre-installed stuff because I have = no use for it or I have better alternatives already. That particular file does not sound like anything critical, so you can either let your antivirus 'clean' it, or else just uninstall all the programs you don't need. --=20 Gary VanderMolen, MS-MVP (Mail) "Simreaper" <guest@unknown-email.com> wrote in message = news:ce03fa8aa4927cc0ab0e2c3efeab566d@nntp-gateway.com... >=20 > Hi Gary, >=20 > Have a question to ask as you seem very technical and I don't know = what > to do right now about this right I did a Trend Micro online scan and = it > came up with one detected grayware/spyware in a Toshiba installed > program named C:/Program Files/ myphotobook/xtras/process.exe, = attached > the screen shot of result as don't know what to do as this isn't a > program use, didn't even know was installed but definitely part of > Toshiba stuff but says threat is low, could this be why Norton doesn't > see it as a threat? Let us know if uninstalling SMS Desktop made an improvement. Antivirus programs are like playing Russian Roulette. You never know when you pull the trigger if a bang will happen.
