I have been looking for an update to the ERD Commander 2005 utility we
bought from Winternals. Microsoft has been strangely silent on the issue,
but today I noticed they have a replacement utility here named Microsoft
Diagnostics and Recovery Toolset:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=5D600369-0554-4595-8AB4-C34B2860E087&displaylang=en

I downloaded it, and to my surprise this *is* ERD Commander. Now the
question is how do I buy it?

When you go to the above link, it tells you that this tool is part of
"Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack" When you go read about that, it
is only available to "Software Assurance" customers. Will this utility
be available through MSDN subscription as well? Overall, it's confusing
to me who can buy this new ERD Commander and who cannot.

Will,
the tool DaRT is only available as part of the Microsoft Desktop
Optimization Pack (MDOP) for Software Assurance customers
So it is only available if you buy the MDOP which contains other great tools
and features
(http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/enterprise/features/tools.mspx)
and this is only available to customer who have a volume license agreement
for their purchase of Windows client licenses and they have taken the
Software Assurance option on top of that (eOpen or Select customers) or have
it built into their volume license deal (Enterprise Agreement customers).
It (MDOP) is then licensed per seat per year

The tools or the other tools in MDOP are not available for production use
via any other means.

(MDOP is available for development and testing purposes under the MSDN
subscription - but obviously you cannot use this in your production
environment, only in your dev test lab as covered by the MSDN master license
agreement - so for production use in your company you have to acquire it via
MDOP for SA customers)

What's the minimum number of clients that must be purchased under software
assurance to be eligible for this?
