hello and thank you for the read. i am having alot of problems trying to install windows vista home premium 64 bit onto my computer (clean install). here are my system specs: Intel Core 2 Cpu @ 2.13ghz 4gb ram geforce 7950 gx2 acpi multiprocessor pc its a dell xps 410, i have windows xp on it. i upgraded to 4gb of ram and saw xp doesnt take advantage of it so i picked this up. I read that new ram might not make it work on install so i tried removing it on first failure. still no dice. i defragged, error checked etc and tried some more. well now my ram is back in there and im thinking of what to do. here is the error i get when i try to install from cd-boot. returned_at_bad_irql and lists alot of 0x000000000000001, etc. every single time. when i boot to xp i try to install from windows but it says it cannot install this operating system and to try booting from the media device. is there something im missing here? my computer is very new and i think would support the 64 bit, am i mistaken? are there steps i can take to get windows vista installed so i may take advantage of more ram?? thank you very much for any help -- mbarr |

You cannot install or repair winxp from within winxp or Vista, you have to boot from the winxp cd. So do we take it that you tried to install Vista, the installation failed & you now have a none functioning PC, or what? The reason you cannot start a Vista x64 installation from XP is that the Vista installer is a 64bit program. You cannot run a 64bit program from 32bit XP. You have to start the installation by booting with the Vista dvd. Have you downloaded the Vista x64 drivers and utilities from Dell? Have you contacted Dell support or used the Dell user forums? What have you found out? Where did you get your copy of Vista x64? If you bought the boxed retail version you are entitled to free installation support from MS according to the instructions in the box. Have you used this?
