I recently built a computer with a SATA hdd and a IDE disk drive. I had also bought vista ultimate 64 bit. I cannot install vista. the screen just freezes, about 20-50% through the expanding files part. when I boot the hdd up, I get the missing bootmgr thing, several times. I tried the tip by lifehacker to use the repair settings thing. I cannot seem to install vista. I even tried to make a copy of the dvd from the comp I am typing with now. -- ccleanerfan |

How much RAM do you have? You might try taking out a stick and see if that works. Did you carry the optical drive and IDE cable over from an older computer? How much ram is in the computer? What is the mobo make and model? We really can't help without some details about your rig. I certainly would not suggest from 64 bit Vista to 32 bit just to use a "free" anti virus package. I suggest that you invest a few bucks and purchase an anti virus package from one of the major all in one protection packages. It will be maintained more currently then the "free" package anyway. If CA is telling you that it is not going to work with x64 I don't know what anyone here can do for you. CA has a consumer product line which I have never seen work in Vista x64 and a product line in the Small and Medium Business group that has always worked with Vista x64. When I have chatted with the consumer folks I learned that they are not familiar with the Small and Medium Business group products at all. When I have chatted with the S&MB folks they directed me to Amazon to buy their desktop client product and walked me through using it on a standalone system. The package cost me $50. However, with the continuing development of Avast!, AVG, and other free and modestly priced commercial solutions I have long ago dropped CA for use on x64 systems. In fact, on three of my Vista x64 systems we are using WLOC quite happily. Curious is absolutely right. Unless you are major shareholder in CA I can think of no reason why you would downgrade from Vista x64 to Vista x86 just to continue using an AV subscription from CA. Check out AVG's security suite or Windows Live OneCare for alternative subscription software or any of the free home user versions.
