Hi,

I have selected the option for "This is a shared computer so do not store my
address book, display pictures, or personal messages on it." under security
tab. I tried to add users to my list. Every time I signed in, I discover the
contact list to be at either 998 or 999. May I know how to solve the issue of
disappearing contacts?

Thank you.

What do you mean by "disappearing contacts". Too many contacts ? - or
are some of your contact names missing?

Are you using a Live identity (such as madscientist@hotmail.com or
madscientist@msn.com?) to sign into WLM? If so, Windows Live Messenger
should display the complete contacts list from that email account?
AFAIK, it will not store the list on the computer you are using.

Windows Live Messenger downloads your contact information from a
Microsoft server, when you log onto your identity. I have found that it
is always best to make any additions, deletions, or other changes AT
SOURCE - and not via Windows Live Messenger (or via Windows Live Mail).

If Windows Live Messenger is running, log off from your Identity .

Then, use your browser to log onto your Hotmail account via the webmail
interface. Click on "Contacts" and add (or edit) the contact's name,
email address and any other relevant details. If you want Windows Live
Messenger to detect when your contact is on-line, you must also type the
contact's email address in the field marked "Windows Live ID" - and you
should also tick the box marked "Use this address with Windows Live
Messenger".

Save your changes, and log off from Hotmail webmail. Next time you use
Windows Live Messenger to sign into your Live Identity, WLM should
download your complete contact list.

The same principle applies to the Windows Live Mail program, which
synchronizes contacts with your Live Identity, every time you run the
program and log on. Windows Live Messenger and Windows Live Mail and
are supposed to synchronize automatically with the source Live account
(which in your case, is @hotmail.com). However, the system is "flaky",
to say the least but in the case of Windows Live Mail, synchronisation
is a two-way process which may lead to duplication, if you add or edit
contacts in both places. That is why it is always preferable to make
all additions, deletions and amendments in one place only, namely via
the webmail interface. Then, Windows Live Messenger and Windows Live
Mail should reflect the changes, the next time you log on via that
identity.

Just make sure Hotmail webmail interface contains the "master list" of
contacts. You can't recover items because if they are missing, they are
missing.

If you have missing contents, you will need to add them manually to the
"master list".
