It is apparently obvious, that being a novice, I've done something wrong when
installing a HDD.

Having installed the HDD, I now want to install Windows XP. I have set BIOs
to boot from the CD Rom drive and everything works fine until I get to the
list of partitions. Selecting C allows me to create the partition which, then
then asks me to stipulate the size of the partition. Happy for the default
maiximum I press Enter to create and then Enter again to Install. It is at
this point that things do not go to plan and the following message is
displayed:

"To install Windows XP on the partition you
selected...........................

However, this disk does not contain a Windows XP - compatible partition."

It then asks me to return to the partition screen and repeat the steps to
create a partition!

The disk is shown as 16120 MB Disk 0 at Id 0 on bus 0 on atapi (MBR).

A big kiss to the first techy that tells me what a fool I am. Looking at the
disk info I fear that the Disk 0 at Id 0 on bus 0 is where the error lies.
Help.......

Many thanks in anticipation and keep up the good work.

Hi,

1. I'd suggest using Vista, not XP, it's much more up-to-date for modern
drives.

2. If you must use XP, you'd need to give technical details of the type
of drive, the interface wiring, and the available BIOS support. (e.g.
SATA using AHCI)
