There is official documentation for VSS 6.0, I think the latest was 6.0d
or 6.0e and I can confirm it works with VS2005, but you should really
consider getting VSS2005 instead or start looking at things like Subversion.

I think Microsoft have let VSS languish too long. This page isn't exactly
complimentary:

Hi Rob,

I agree with much of the article, but the article claims you can't use
it on the public internet and that it requires SMB. This part is not
true. You can use it with a web server and multiple developers can
connect from remote locations, even on fairly slow links.
