I am an MSDN subscriber since more than 10 years so I thought I had
the essentials. But now I had a case to run tests on MSDOS 6 and
started looking for setup disk images on my MSDN disks.
I fould a set for MSDOS 6.22, but when I try to install from these I
get a message that they are only for *upgrading* to 6.22, not for new
install....

What is the purpose of including an *upgrade* on the MSDN CD and not
the real install??

And more importantly, where can I find the actual MSDOS 6.0
installation disks so I then can use the upgrade to 6.22?

I have a feeling DOS 6.22 was only issued as an upgrade, I've never seen a
"full" version.

The trick is to boot from a DOS floppy then use "sys" to get the basic
system files on the HD. You can then boot from the 6.22 U/G and it will
run fine. I have just done it for a VM.

If you haven't got a DOS floppy get one from Bootdisk.com:

THanks,
I just found that I can download the MSDOS 6.0 and 6.22 files from my
MSDN download. But I can't get it to install. It insists on creating a
boot floppy instead and then it says it is not the correct disk....

Concerning bootdisk, I downloaded the boot600.exe, but then I don't
know what to do with it...
If I run the exe it does not offer to expand just requests me to
insert a floppy in my drive and of course I don't have a floppy drive
(who has these days?)
I was actually going to do what you have done, namely create a VPC2007
guest VM with DOS 6 so i need a vfd (virtual floppy disk file).

Do you have any hints on what to do with the boot600.exe file???

I have a floppy, I have just built a new machine around the X48 chipset
and having a floppy was essential for me. As well as playing with DOS on
VMs I have several BBC machines and need floppy drives to move data
between them. I have a brand new boxed 5.25" floppy as well! If you want
to play with DOS or any of the classic machines a floppy is vital (it is
also needed sometimes to install XP and W2K). It may be worth your while
getting a USB floppy.

Only if you have a floppy drive - you can expand it into a boot disk then
:-)

I got it going!
My wife has a floppy on her PC so I could create the boot floppy from
the downloaded exe. Then I also used WinImage on her PC to covert the
physical boot floppy to a virtual floppy file (VFD) for my VPC2007
guest.

After booting with the VFD I formatted and sys-ed the hard disk and
now it recognizes a valid 6.22 upgrade.

Likewise I used WinImage to transfer the update files to virtual
floppies so they could be handled on my PC without a floppy drive.

All is working now and I have a MSDOS 6.22 guest running! :-)
