Hi Helpful Group! :-) I thought I'd make a *positive* post for a change. I actually got something to work! I migrated my system from XP Professional x64 to Vista Ultimate 64- bit. I expected a nightmare, as I had a relatively old Tyan K8WE (S2895) motherboard and I was using Opteron 270 CPUs. I also had a beta driver and BIOS for my AMCC 3ware 9550SX SATA2 RAID card. I can not say it was easy, as it took me several nights of being up until 3:00 or 4:00 a.m. to get the old machine ready, but the actually *install* of Vista was almost painless. It seemed as if it took less than one hour. I have then spent several days reinstalling software. The machine, of course, runs *worse,* but I now have more software options. Apple iTunes, for example, correctly recognizes and installs on my operating system. I have a long ways to go, but I wanted to encourage others to make the switch *if* they need to. Jim |

Glad to hear you got it all up and working. Yeah, it's a nuisance to re-install everything, but if you run the Windows Easy Transfer (WET) from the Vista DVD before you do the rebuild, you can save off most of your settings. You still need to install your programs, but it definitely saves time on the reconfiguration portion. -- Charlie. http://msmvps.com/blogs/xperts64 http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/profile/charlie.russel "Jim" <jmegas@cal.berkeley.edu> wrote in message news:6b7a4a6f-0954-400e-8aba-ae073a9e26c2@d45g2000hsc.googlegroups.com... > Hi Helpful Group! :-) > > I thought I'd make a *positive* post for a change. I did *not* run the Windows Easy Transfer (WET) from the Vista DVD, but I had never moved most of my documents to that machine. I was pleasantly surprised to find that my old storage directories were still there on the new machine, and I could find all of my old files I had stashed away there. I could reinstall from the hard drive (RAID array) and I did not need to use the DVDs I had burned. Thank you for your help! :-) Jim |
