Hello! I have the second most complete MSDN subscription, the one with one of the Team edition (developer I think) of Visual Studio. This edition comes with a license for Windows Server 2003 SP2 and Windows Server 2008 I may use if I purchase a server for my development purposes. I'm considering to do that, a server from DELL. How should I do concerning ordering the server from DELL, should I for instance just inform that I have this MSDN license or what, I mean, I should not pay for a second license for the server operating system, now to DELL? Best regards, Henrik Dahl |

Dell does offer some servers without an OS. Keep in mind though, the server is for development only if you're using an MSDN subscription. Usually the MSDN OS licenses are not for production use so if you need to put the server into a scenario where it will host production code, you'll need to buy a real Windows license. Thank you very much for your prompt answer. It's solely for development. As far as I know DELL has some DELL specific installation media with appropriate drivers or the like. As far as I know they also have some kind of software installation service centre which may drive installation in some comprehensive way. Do you know if it's possible to get such conveniences while using the MSDN license? The Dell server setup DVD will prompt for the Windows DVD and at that point you can (probably) give it the MSDN DVD. -- Gerry Hickman (London UK) |

Also note that the server may only be used by MSDN subscribers (and their subscription must include the software being used). So if you have other people using the server for development purposes, then they'll need MSDN subscriptions too - or just buy the retail software.
