Hi all, I am an IT professional who made a small mistake when purchasing my new laptop. I have a 64 bit dual core processor with Vista premium and found out that I needed IIS 7.0 that included Windows Authentification in order to do some work I have in VS.NET 2005 and for installing Reporting Services. So, I'm going to upgrade to Vista Ultimate. Vista Premium IIS 7.0 is LIMITED. Major bummer! My question is whether I need the 64 bit version. I am basically a devloper who will develop C# web apps and will host my own Reporting Services site on my laptop and SQL Server stuff with SSIS, SSAS and SSRS. I'll eventualy end up on the next release of SQL Server (coming out next year), and I'm sure I'll end up working with 3.0 and the new VS.NET that is in Beta. So should I risk having some devices of mine not working and get the 64 bit because evenutaly I'll HAVE to go 64, or will 32 do just fine? I'd have asked elsewhere, but I thought a community of developers would best know what we need, ya know? Thanks, Keith |

If you purchase Ultimate retail, both a 32 bit and 64 bit DVD are included, so a choice of which to purchase is not really not necessary. Also see: http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/vistaget.htm I do not think the same is true for OEM. -- Jupiter Jones [MVP] http://www3.telus.net/dandemar http://www.dts-l.org "greenmtnsun" <greenmtnsun@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:BBADD34E-D6E3-48C8-8449-437A3BFD44DA@microsoft.com... > Hi all, > > I am an IT professional who made a small mistake when purchasing my > new > laptop. I have sucessfully installed vista home premium on my compaq presario F750US laptop (amd Athalon X2 processor). Basically I downloaded the 64 bit vista home premium as a torrent and verified the MD5 checksum to make sure it was unaltered. Then i installed it on my laptop, worked like a charm. I had to activate with Microsoft over the phone and the lady said it was not a problem what I had done that my OEM home premium key was perfectly valid with the 64 bit version I had installed. Visual Studio 2008 plays well with vista x64. IIS 7.0 installs well too. The 64 bit versions of Internet Explorer and Firefix (must go outside firefox to get this) work well also, BUT you will run into a problem. JRE and flash aren't available for 64 bit browsers yet. So I have Regular and 64 bit versions of browsers installed in case I need to go to a java-enabled page or a flash enabled page. Well let me clarify the JRE IS available, but it doesn't have browser plugins as of this date. It is hard enough to find the 64 bit Windows JRE, you must go under other versions off the main page and click around a bit. All my device drivers, including my samsung cell phone cable, audio, video, and many codecs for multimedia I found in 64 bit flavor. I had to get divx though over xvid becuase xvid isn't available in 64 bit yet. So for the most part you can run anything you want that is 32 bit using WOW (Windows on Windows) technology. As far as SQL Server Express 2005, that is only available 32 bit, but not a big deal for a development laptop. I've got the 64 bit ultra vnc installed. This works very well (104 RC 13) Also I downloaded the avast 64 bit antivirus, it seems to be running well but part of it is still 32 bit. That's all the little caveats I could think of so far. So far I am very satisfied overall. Soon, everything will be 64 bit, I'm glad I took the plunge now. Scott Emick 'Euclid Friendly Computer Service' (http://efcs.webhop.biz) -- semick |
